The First Steps

By reading this article, I’m assuming that you are interested in finding out about the basic outline of starting a successful poker affiliate website. Some people may be a little more experienced than others in Internet marketing and developing websites, but nonetheless, this quick overview should prove to be very useful for all new aspiring poker affiliates.

For those that are completely new to developing websites and have little idea about getting a website online, you may want to read the article about creating a website before looking any further. But for the rest of you, this is where poker affiliating begins…

Step 1 – Find a Niche

The first step for any new affiliate is to find a solid niche in the online poker market. A niche is a small part of the market that you should look to target to help give yourself the best opportunities to gain traffic and make money. For example, heads up poker is a small part of poker that you could work on as your niche.

By targeting a niche and building a quality site, you will find it much easier to obtain traffic and convert that traffic into real money players. If you try and compete in the bigger poker affiliate fields, you are going to come up against some very stiff competition and find it very difficult to make money.

It may take a little research at the start to find out about all the possible poker niches, but don’t rush yourself, and take as much time as you need to find the niche that is going to be right for you. It is best to choose a niche that has little competition, but will bring you lots of traffic through the search engines. It is also a good idea to choose a niche that you will enjoy developing a site around. For more information, read our article on finding a poker niche.

Step 2 – Choose a Domain

Although this may seem pretty straightforward, it’s not always easy to settle on a definite domain name for your site. After all, it’s going to be the domain name that you are going to have to stick with for the life of your site, unless of course you want to go through all the hassle of changing it. It’s good to get your desired keywords into your domain name if possible, but it’s not essential. For example, if you are going to create a website around Stud strategy, it would be a good idea to get ‘stud strategy’ in the domain somewhere.

However, you should not go too far out of your way to get a domain name with your keywords in it, as it is much better to stick with a name that is going to be short and catchy. If you can get a catchy domain that also contains your keywords, you have pretty much found the perfect domain for your site. But no worries if you can’t get those keywords in, you can still rank perfectly well without those terms in your domain. Step 3 – Get a Solid Design

Although we may become great webmasters and affiliate marketers, it does not necessarily mean that we will ever be any good at designing websites, and that’s something that we are going to need to admit from the off. If are able to design a nice website then great, but for the rest of us, we should look to get our websites designed elsewhere.

Many affiliates spend far too much time working on a below-par design because they are not designers by trade, and this is a common error that consumes so much time that could be better spent doing something more productive.

When I first started, I wanted to be an all-round affiliate by designing my own website and then doing all the work for it. But before long I realised that no matter how hard I tried, I couldn’t get my site to look as good as all the other top affiliates. So I went off and spent $200 on a great design, and I have never looked back since. Don’t waste your time trying to design a site if you are not a web designer, just find someone else to do your design for you and save yourself from wasting hours trying to create your own. It really is in your best interest as a future successful affiliate.

On the other hand however, you can get some great free templates that you can start out with. Although it is nice to have a good design, it is not the be all and end all of making a great poker site. As long as you have solid content and a template that works well, it’s all you are going to need to make money. For more information, read our article on getting a website design.

Step 4 – Write lots of quality content

This is probably going to be the make or break of your site. You can find the best niche and domain in the world, and have the greatest design ever, but if you don’t have the content to back it up you are not going to make it as an affiliate. Having lots of quality content on your site has countless amounts of positives that will help you become successful as an affiliate…

  • Having lots of quality content makes your visitors stay for longer
  • If you have quality content, people are going to link to your site
  • With lots of content, you will have many points of entry from the search engines

After all, people visit websites for information, and if you are there to provide these people with the information you are looking for, you will find that success shouldn’t be too far away.

You should try and write at least an article a day, which isn’t so hard at all. If you can manage to write 2 great articles about your chosen subject for your poker site, you will have around 60 articles after a month alone, and you will already have a sizeable site on your hands that will be able to hit the search engines pretty hard. If you keep writing at this pace you will have 100 great articles on your site, which is going to be more than enough to bring in the links and traffic that you need when you start to rank well.

However, don’t stop there. More content essentially equals more traffic, and the more traffic you have the more money you will be making. Generating quality content should be the source of your affiliate income, so you should strive to write as much as you can. At the end of the day, an aspiring poker affiliate should be a content writing machine at the start in preparation for the traffic that they will be receiving from Google and other search engines.

Writing Content

Step 5 – Search Engine Optimisation (SEO)

This concept is very important, and is something that you are going to hear a lot about as an affiliate. SEO is a pretty huge topic, and there are numerous sites with thousands of pages dedicated to this idea, but we’re going to break it down and keep it simple. SEO is basically modifying your pages in the correct way to help you rank better in the search engines. This is very important as an affiliate because if we can rank well in the search engines, we will increase the amount of traffic we get to our site.

It is a good idea to read a lot about SEO before actually creating your pages, because it will be a lot easier to SEO your pages from the start rather than go back over each one a few weeks or months in after creating your site. SEO really isn’t that difficult to learn, but it’s something that is going to be as important as writing content to become a successful affiliate. You can find out the general idea and strategy for this in our article on the basics of SEO.

Step 6 – Get Links

Getting links is tied in with SEO, as it is a fundamental way to help your site rank better in the search engines. In a nutshell, the amount of links that point to a site helps Google to determine which sites are going to be valuable to the people using their search engine. Obviously a site with lots of links is going to have quality content, so Google looks at the number of links pointing to a site and uses this information to help it rank the best sites at the top. So getting links is another key part of creating a top-ranking poker website and getting lots of traffic.

Getting Links

So there we have it. Those are essentially the 6 steps that you will need to take to make it as an affiliate in the poker industry. There is obviously going to be lots of information that you can pick up along the way to make your development easier through the articles on this site, but that’s pretty much the framework of creating moneymaking poker websites. So stick to the simple steps above, and you should be on your way to making some great websites and making money as a poker affiliate. Good Luck.
