Finding A Niche

Finding a niche is the starting point for any aspiring affiliate. Before you think about web design or writing content, you have to think about a specific niche in the poker market that you are going to target. Finding and targeting a good niche is the key to making money in the competitive poker industry. So without further ado…

What is a niche?

The dictionary defines a ‘niche’ in the context we are looking for as:

“Noun: A special area of demand for a product or service”

To define this a little more clearly, a niche is a small area of the poker market that we should look to target to make a profit from. For example, a niche in the big poker world could be ‘stud strategy’, ‘poker DVD reviews’ or ‘multi-table tournament strategy’, as these are all small segments of the big world of poker.

Why is it important to find a niche?

It is important to find a niche as a poker affiliate because it will help you to get your hands on more traffic for your website. If you try and make a general online poker website with standard room reviews and strategy, you are not going to stand a chance of ranking well in the search engines because there are so many other authority sites that are going to outrank you, even if you put substantial amounts of effort in. You will be not offering anything too unique to the visitors, and so you are just going to be easily outranked by the bigger and better sites.

However, if you find a small niche in the poker market for example ‘Omaha hi-lo strategy’, you will have far less competition. This will make it easier for you to rank well in the search engines and grab a hold of the vital traffic that you need to make money. Traffic is key in this industry, as the more traffic you have, the more likely it is that you are going to make money.

Many new poker affiliates have aspirations of making “the biggest and best poker site ever” (I know, because I did when I started), but if you try and do this I can pretty much guarantee you that you will fail.

Just because you are not going to make the best bonus code or room review site in the world, it doesn’t mean you aren’t going to make money – far from it. There is plenty of money to be made by targeting a smaller niche with far less competition, and you will find that you will be making money far quicker than if you tried to compete with the big boys in the poker world.

Even the current sizeable affiliates of today wouldn’t think about trying to compete with the biggest sites in the industry, as its just not going to be worth their time and effort. So they too will target smaller niches and try and create the authority site in that niche, it’s a simple recipe for success.

Which niche should you choose?

Finding a niche is always easier said than done, but it’s not going to be impossible to find a good one if you put your mind to it. Always try and think outside the box and brainstorm your ideas on a piece of paper; one thing will lead to another, and before you know it you will have a list of possible niches that you could target. It may take a few days or weeks before you find your perfect niche, but this is a small time in comparison to the amount of months or years you will be working on it. So be patient.

The best niches to target are the ones that you have an interest in. You may find that you discover a great niche, but it’s going to be very difficult to dominate that niche if you don’t enjoy writing about it. At the end of the day, your niche is what you are going to focus your whole affiliating work around, so you should be as happy as possible to spend hours working within it.

Writing content for a niche is pretty easy if you are familiar with it and enjoy what you are taking about, but it can become one hell of a grind if you don’t. If you don’t have a passion for what you are writing about, it will show up in your work and you will have a site full of lack-lustre content. So try your best to pick a niche that you will enjoy working around… it will be a lot more enjoyable.
